Job Opening: WMEAC, Environmental Education Director

Title: Environmental Education Director

Reports to: Executive Director

FTE: 1.0

Pay Scale: Salaried/Exempt; Total annual compensation including benefits $45,000 – $50,000 commensurate with experience

Position Summary

West Michigan Environmental Action Council’s (WMEAC) Environmental Education Director (EED) will work collaboratively with the organization’s diverse stakeholders to deliver WMEAC-branded environmental education (EE) opportunities and products throughout West Michigan. WMEAC is a regional organization serving multiple constituents in West Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes basin; the EED is required to manage multiple projects and has responsibilities in both planning and action. The EED reports to the Executive Director and is supported by the Environmental Education Coordinator and WMEAC interns.

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage the growth and implementation of WMEAC’s Environmental Education Programs including; Teach for the Watershed, Zero Waste in Landfill, and Teach for our Energy Future

  • Communicate with community organizations, educators, administrators, curriculum specialists, scientists, and businesses

  • Update curricula to maintain current educational standards and place-based learning

  • Work with marketing/communications staff to promote and publicize programs in multiple media

  • Engage with WMEAC’s IDEAL (Inclusion and Development of Environmental Allies and Leaders) Committee to incorporate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices into Environmental Education programming

  • Coordinate staffing of educational programs

  • Design and administer educational workshops

  • Update curricula to include age-appropriate introduction to Environmental Justice principles and frameworks (training/professional development will be offered for this responsibility)

  • Supervise environmental education coordinator and other staff on occasion

  • Oversee educational volunteer outreach and training

  • Oversee management of educational materials and supplies

  • Deliver fee-based environmental education; matching of community needs with funding opportunities

  • Collaborate with the other directors on program development and delivery, grant-writing, and regular reporting

  • Maintain mutually beneficial partnerships with school districts, units of government, and other environmental/conservation organizations

  • Work to ensure the continued sustainability of WMEAC and its programs

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or environmental education; equivalent professional experience will also be considered

  • At least two (2) years of experience in teaching or working with youth in an educational setting, nonprofit or educational program/project management

  • Experience working on grants; Principal Investigator or lead grant manager and reporting on deliverables for state/federal/privately funded programs/projects preferred

  • Background with regional watershed, water quality, and stormwater policy issues; field experience preferred

  • Experience growing and developing programs in a fiscally sustainable manner

  • Excellent communication and writing skills, including public speaking

  • Experience working collaboratively with staff, team members, and partners

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Spanish language skills are preferred but not required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Must have current driver’s license

  • Commitment to protecting the environment
