Children’s Activities
The expanded Children's Area will have a new selection of activities for younger attendees to enjoy. Featuring the following in 2020:
Sensory table - This is geared towards the real young kids and consists of two large containers, one filled with rice and the other filled with fine sand, with sand toys and measuring tools that they can play with.
Trash to Treasures - Youth will make small sailboats consisting of three wine corks rubber banded together, a toothpick as the mast, and a sail cut out of recycled box board (i.e. cereal boxes). The focus is on littering, trash and recycling.
Build a Bug – Youth will learn about adaptations and create their own bugs, using a styrofoam egg as the body of the bug and various craft materials (i.e. pipe cleaners, fuzzy pom pom balls, feathers, googly eyes) to represent adaptations.
Groundwater Flow Model – This model that looks like a cross between an aquarium and an ant farm, uses food coloring to show how water moves underground and interacts with surface water.
Foil Boats – Youth will be given a piece of aluminum foil and tasked with creating a boat that will stay afloat while holding as many pennies as possible. When finished, they will get to test the buoyancy of their boat by putting it in water and placing pennies on it until it sinks.
Bird Feeders – Youth will make pine cone bird feeders by spreading vegetable shortening or suet (to replace peanut butter in case of nut allergies) on their pine cone and then rolling it in bird seed. A twine loop attached to the pine cone will allow them to hang the feeder in their yard at home.
Learn How to Cast – A kiddie pool will be set up for kids to learn how to cast a fishing rod (kids’ pole) with the aim of casting into the pool. Those who get the line in the pool will get a piece of candy or some other “prize”.
Insect Search-and-Find – Preserved insects will be hidden in a created habitat inside a tank and kids will be tasked with finding as many insects as they can.
