Kent County Fish Consumption Advisory
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released a fish consumption advisory report on March 15th for two bodies of water in Kent County. People consuming fish caught in Freska and Versluis Lakes are recommended to limit servings of blue gill, sunfish and northern pike to 2 or fewer servings per month. This advisory was put into effect due to the presence of mercury and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) found in fish tissue. PFAS are widely used, man-made chemicals that can have adverse health effects in people after being exposed over a long period of time, according to the US EPA (https://www.epa.gov/pfas). Other bodies of water throughout the state of Michigan have been identified by DHHS, and more information can be found here: www.michigan.gov/eatsafefish.
