Once you've adopted a drain, you should keep it clear of leaves, debris, and trash from 10 feet around the drain in either direction. Dispose of trash and recycling in appropriate receptacles and organic matter (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) according to your community's guidelines. Click here to learn more about leaf disposal in your community.

Try to clear your drain before major rain storms, and shovel snow away in the winter to allow snowmelt to drain.

When cleaning your drain, wear gloves to protect your hands and bright and/or reflective clothing to make sure you're visible to cars. Always clear from the sidewalk, not the street. And never reach into or attempt to lift the grate.
